Winter Skincare Tips: The Biggest Mistakes to Avoid in Cold Weather

The crisp air and first snowfall are a magical time in the winter, but this air can also bring a host of skincare problems. Cold temperatures, dry indoor heating, and harsh winds can strip your skin of moisture, leaving it dry, irritated, and prone to sensitivity. To keep your skin healthy and glowing during the colder months, avoid these common winter skincare mistakes.

1. Not Wearing Sunscreen in the Winter

It’s easy to forget about sun protection when it’s cold and cloudy, but UV rays can still damage your skin in winter.

Why You Should Wear Sunscreen in the Winter

UV rays are present year-round, regardless of the temperature. UVB rays which cause sunburns may be less intense, but UVA rays⎯responsible for premature aging and wrinkles, are still high. “Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit you twice, further increasing your risk of skin cancer and premature aging.” Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and apply it every morning to all exposed skin including your face, neck, and hands. If you spend extended time outdoors, especially skiing or snowboarding, reapply sunscreen every two hours. Shop recommended sunscreens.

2. Over-Exfoliating Your Skin

Exfoliation is great for removing dead skin cells, however, during the winter, your skin is already fragile, so over-exfoliating isn’t good for your skin.

Why Exfoliating Too Often in the Winter is Harmful

Your skin’s outer layer, which is the moisture barrier, is your first line of defense against environmental stressors. Over-exfoliating with scrubs or chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs, strips away this protective layer, causing increased sensitivity, redness, tiny cracks in the skin, and severe dehydration. Because of this, your skin is more vulnerable to redness and inflammation.

Exfoliate up to twice a week, and pay close attention to how your skin responds. If you notice any redness or irritation, exfoliate even less frequently. Always follow up with a deeply hydrating moisturizer to help repair and support your skin barrier. Shop recommended hydrating moisturizers.

3. Using The Wrong Moisturizer

One of the most common mistakes is assuming your regular moisturizer will suffice during winter.

Why Using the Right Moisturizer in the Winter is Important

As the air becomes drier, your skin needs a formula to lock in moisture and prevent water loss. Using a moisturizer that is too light for winter means your skin won't get the nourishment it needs. Light moisturizers may evaporate too quickly, leaving your skin feeling tight and dry just a few hours after application. This can make your skin look dull, and fine lines and wrinkles may be more prominent. Your skin may even try to overcompensate by producing more oil, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. We recommend: Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream, Biologique Recherche Creme Metamorphique, BIOEFFECT Hydrating Cream, and Future Mega Cream

4. Taking Long, Hot Showers

A steaming hot shower can feel really good on a cold day, but it’s one of the worst things you can do for your skin.

Why You Should Avoid Hot Showers

Hot water strips the skin of water content and breaks down its natural barrier function. As a result, your skin can become dry, itchy and irritated.” Instead, opt for lukewarm water instead of scalding hot, and try to limit your shower time to 10 minutes or less. After showering, gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel so it’s still slightly damp. Then immediately apply a body lotion or cream to lock in the moisture from the shower. The change in your shower temperature can make a big difference in preventing body dryness and itching. Shop recommended body lotions and moisturizers. We also suggest adding Environ Vitamin A, C & E Body Oil for extra nourishment.

5. Forgetting Hand & Lip Care

Hands and lips are some of the most exposed and delicate parts of your body, which makes them particularly vulnerable in cold weather.

Why You Need to Make Hand & Lip Care Part of Your Skincare Routine

Harsh winds, low humidity, and indoor heating can quickly strip away moisture, leaving your hands dry, cracked, and itchy, and your lips chapped or even painful. Lips produce very little natural oil, which means they depend entirely on outside moisture and protection to stay soft and healthy. Your hands are exposed to frequent washing, surfaces, and chilly outdoor air—all of which can weaken the skin’s natural barrier.

For your hands, apply a rich, emollient hand cream multiple times a day, especially after washing your hands.

For your lips, use a nourishing lip balm to reapply throughout the day, especially before heading outside or before bed. Shop recommended lip care products.
